Riku Onda (October 25, 1964 – ) is a Japanese novelist. Her real name is Nanae Kumagai. She was born in Aomori City, Aomori Prefecture (sometimes said to have been born in Miyagi Prefecture).
She made her debut with “The Sixth Sayoko” (1992). She is known for her depictions of nostalgic scenes that cross the boundaries of horror and science fiction. She won Japan Booksellers’ Award for “Night Picnic” (2004) and the Naoki and Japan Booksellers’ Award for “Honeybees and Distant Thunder” (2016).
Her work has been adapted for film and television. “The Aosawa Murders” was her first crime novel and the first time she was translated into English. It was selected by The New York Times as a Notable Book of 2020.
